I watched an 11 year old japanese serial today!
LONG VACATION, the Takuya Kimura one!!
Needless to say, it's awesome. If you dont like messy relationship stories, this serial is ALL about sticky relationships. Plot was fun and not so predictable. Music was so good, I can totally understand why fans still rant about it now. The only parts I cried was when Takuya played the piano pieces for Yamaguchi ( i think that's the actress' name). The piano pieces were so nice! I'm still trying to figure the cliched analogies they were repeatedly trying to link. Like in order to play the piano well, you must "play it like you're playing for someone". Also, you must "burst through that wall deep within you" so that you can express yourself, i.e taking away pride/insecurities etc and be honest with thyself or the other person. or it can be extrapolated further.
Anyhow. [SPOILERS ahead; Read either when you have already watched it or you cant see yourself watching it in future ever] Main gist:
31 yr old female protagonist got stood up at her wedding, ran to fiance's place met his really cute 25 yr old roommate (Takuya), somehow moved in with him. Male protagonist joins piano competitions; he's a piano teacher too. Classical pieces very much make up the soundtrack of this serial. Sadly, I wish I know the half the names of the pieces so can pester friends to play them. People around them get into the sticky web of things, including themselves, and both of them end up happily married in Boston. Middle part is the usual mei-wan-mei-liaoness. The characters sort of took turns liking one another before pairing off or remaining single.
Oh and i wondered alot what the title had to do with the plot. They explained very little. Something like when we experience pitfalls and trials in life, we can just call it a Long Vacation. Be depressed about it, learn from it and come away from the vacation refreshed. Interesting eh? Cos none of the characters like went on holidays. Like typical budgeted jap serials, Long Vacation revolves around the same few sets. It is not nauseating like others but rather it becomes nostalgic.
I'm going to have a "long vacation" soon!!
